Spatial attributes of the Z32 map IΙ – From cipher metric to angular cartography

Introduction

The fourth volume of the Z32 series moves from spatial observation into systemic interpretation. The first three volumes established Z32 as part of the bomb-rhetoric continuum, placed the canonical crime scenes into a Mount Diablo angular field, and explored the 17-degree MAG N shift through water, sulfur, mining, and historical terrain. This volume takes the next step: it argues that Z32 must be read as the cartographic endpoint of a larger cipher cascade. Z408 provides the first grid; the Debut Letter transfers cipher metrics into prose and page geometry; Z340 proves that movement and transposition are essential to the system; Z13 compresses inherited keys into a short name-riddle; and Z32 externalizes the entire process onto a map. The central claim is therefore not that Z32 is merely an unsolved cipher attached to a bomb threat, but that it formalizes the ambiguity already present in the canonical crimes themselves. Space, time, route, date, victim pattern, authorship, and geography become operators inside the same map-machine. In Z32, the grid leaves the page and becomes terrain.

1. Summary of the First Three Z32 Volumes

The first three volumes of the Z32 series established the foundation for reading the June 26, 1970, map-and-cipher communication not as an isolated unsolved fragment, but as the culmination of a longer communicative and symbolic process.

Volume 1 began with the state of the art [1]. Its first purpose was to situate Z32 inside the broader history of proposed solutions, methods, and interpretive frameworks. The map cipher was not approached as an empty field awaiting a single heroic solve, but as a historically weighted object: already surrounded by the radian theory, chemical-engineering approaches, triangulation proposals, San Francisco landmark proposals, statistical solutions, and multiple researcher traditions. The first volume therefore served two purposes. It acknowledged prior work, and it framed Z32 as part of the killer’s bomb rhetoric: a sequence beginning with the November 9, 1969, bomb letter, continuing through the Belli letter, the Z13/bomb-diagram communication, the Dragon Card, and finally reaching the June 26, 1970, Button Letter with the Phillips 66 map and Z32 cipher [2].

This was the first major conclusion: Z32 does not appear suddenly. It belongs to a bomb-language continuum.

The second conclusion of Volume 1 was methodological. The question was not simply whether the bomb existed in literal engineering terms. The stronger question was why the killer would develop a cipher, a map, a compass instruction, and a threat architecture around the bomb idea. Even if the bomb was never practically real, the bomb concept was communicatively real. It functioned as a decoy, a threat, a symbolic machine, and a way of extending the case from murder scenes into public geography. Z32 therefore had to be approached not only as a cipher, but as a map-riddle embedded in a larger CHS structure: contextual, holistic, and systemic.

Volume 2 then moved from state-of-the-art review into canonical geography [3]. Its central action was to take the killer’s instruction seriously:

“The Map coupled with this code will tell you where the bomb is set. You have untill next Fall to dig it up.”

The Phillips 66 map was not treated as decorative. Mount Diablo was treated as a functional meridian, and the canonical crime scenes were plotted in relation to it. Lake Herman Road, Blue Rock Springs, Lake Berryessa, Presidio Heights, and the Mason-and-Geary North interpretation of MAG N were placed into a shared angular field.

This produced a second major conclusion: the canonical crimes can be studied as a topological graph centered on Mount Diablo.

Thus, the first two Solano County crime scenes, LHR and BRS, fall close together in the Aquarius angular region. Lake Berryessa falls into Pisces. Presidio Heights and Mason-and-Geary North fall into Sagittarius. When the 17-degree magnetic-north correction is introduced, the three couple-attack crime scenes — LHR, BRS, and LB — align into Pisces, while PH and MAG N shift into Capricorn. This shift did not solve Z32 by itself, but it opened a powerful interpretive field. The killer’s instruction to set zero to MAG N could be read not only as a conventional magnetic-north correction, but also as a layered code in which MAG N may carry two simultaneous values: Magnetic North and Mason and Geary — North.

Volume 2 therefore introduced one of the most important CHS mechanisms in the Z32 series: substitution and transposition. MAG N is not only an instruction. It is a hinge. It can operate as an acronym, a directional correction, a route-marker in the Presidio Heights attack, and a mechanism by which the angular field is shifted.

Volume 3 then developed the consequences of that shift [4]. The 17-degree correction was no longer treated only as a cartographic adjustment. It became a space-domain operation with time-domain and historical effects. In the Solano County pair, LHR and BRS shift from Aquarius to Pisces. This was not presented as casual astrology or as proof of the killer’s belief system. Instead, it was treated as a coded dataset: the celestial sign-change points back toward terrestrial water.

This is where the Z32 series moved into the water/sulfur/mining layer.

Aquarius, the air sign of the water-bearer, became a figure for air controlling or carrying water. Pisces, the mutable water sign, became the sign into which the first three couple crimes shift after MAG N correction. In the Solano County context, this shift points back toward the historical water and mining landscape between Lake Herman Road and Blue Rock Springs: Sulphur Springs Mountain, St. John’s Mine, Hastings Mine, mercury/quicksilver operations, water diversion, contamination, Lake Herman, Sulphur Springs Creek, and the earlier identity of Blue Rock Springs as White Sulphur Springs. The respective visual is presented in Figure1.

Figure 1. Summary of space-time shift-transposition scheme for Solano County canonical crime scenes

This was the third major conclusion: the Z32 map-riddle may operate through a space-time transposition between celestial symbols and historical terrestrial infrastructure.

Volume 3 also introduced the S-16 reference index. Sulfur is symbolized by S and has atomic number 16. The S-rune, Sowilo/Sigel, is the sun rune in the Elder Futhark sequence. This creates a substitution-transposition pathway:

Figure 2. From Runic system to Chemical element: S-symbol as a substitution-transposition pathway

The same symbol-field therefore moves between chemistry, mining, water contamination, runic solar language, and the Zodiac’s own use of astronomical or quasi-astronomical symbols. In that structure, the “Sun Bomb” begins to emerge not merely as a literal explosive device, but as a semantic construction: bomb, sun, sulfur, water, map, mountain, and cipher all converging inside the Z32 riddle.

The first three Z32 volumes therefore established the following framework:

Volume 1 placed Z32 inside the bomb-rhetoric continuum and the state of prior research.

Volume 2 plotted the canonical crime scenes through Mount Diablo, angular order, MAG N, and the 17-degree shift.

Volume 3 interpreted the shift through Solano County water history, sulfur/mining geography, and the Sun/Sulfur/S-rune index.

The task of Volume 4 is to take the next step. Before the Z32 can be read as a final map-riddle, it must be placed inside the full canonical cipher cascade.

Z32 is not only a map cipher.

It is the fourth canonical cipher in a system- and that system begins with Z408.

2. The Canonical Ciphers as a Cascade System

The Zodiac ciphers should not be studied only as separate cryptograms. They should also be studied as a cascade system.

A cascade system is a sequence in which each stage receives structure from earlier stages while also producing conditions for later stages. In such a system, the output of one layer may become the key, residue, constraint, metric, or symbolic dictionary of the next. The later cipher does not simply follow the earlier cipher in time. It inherits from it.

This is the core reason why Z32 must be studied after Z408, Z340, and Z13, not beside them.

Z408 is the first canonical cipher and the first full declaration of the killer’s written system. It introduces not only plaintext content, but also grid discipline, symbol inventory, row/column architecture, spelling irregularity, final residue, and the problem of the unsolved or semi-solved tail. Its accepted structure is 24 by 17. Yet when the Z408 material is re-clustered through alternative dimensional logic, the cipher begins to foreshadow later cipher-lengths. A 13-column transformation produces a 32 by 13 structure: the two later unsolved canonical lengths, Z32 and Z13, hidden as dimensions inside the first cipher’s metamorphosis [5].

This is the first cascade principle: the first cipher contains the later cipher numbers.

Z340 inherits and mutates the Z408 system. It shares the 17-column discipline but changes the number of rows [6]. It retains certain symbol-plaintext latches while transforming the broader key. It introduces a more advanced transposition logic, later proven by the Oranchak–Van Eycke–Blake solution [7]. Z340 therefore shows that the killer’s cipher system cannot be read only through simple substitution. It requires attention to route, displacement, reading order, and geometrical transformation [8].

This is the second cascade principle: later ciphers inherit symbols but change movement.

Z13 then forces the cascade problem into its most compressed form [9]. Its length is too short to generate a secure internal key by itself. Therefore, if it is to be approached systemically, it must draw external information from the previous ciphers. The Z13 proposal developed in the earlier volumes treated the cipher as an entropy-structured object: alphabet length eight, frequency tiers, and a strongest tier occupied by the three “8-ball” symbols. Seven of the eight unique Z13 symbols can be read through the previous cipher system, especially through the Z340 key. The 8-ball then requires a function, not a free guess: a positional right-shift by E, producing J, L, N, followed by an order adjustment grounded in the tier-2 N logic. The resulting name, Andrea J. Odell, does not end the riddle. It opens a genealogical one [10], [11].

This is the third cascade principle: a short cipher may not contain its own key but may inherit one from the previous system.

The Z13 work also introduced a second branch: a Z408-based approach. There, the Sun glyph, S-rune, ED sequence, and AEN opening of Z13 created a pathway from the Z408 symbol field into the Z13 cipher text. This did not cancel the Z340-based proposal. It showed that the same short cipher may be reachable through more than one prior layer. The Z13 therefore becomes a junction point where Z340-derived key logic and Z408-derived symbolic logic converge [12].

This is the fourth cascade principle: the canonical ciphers do not form a single straight line; they form a branching system with convergent paths.

This is where the Debut Letter must be introduced as a parallel branch [13].

The August 4, 1969, Debut Letter is not a cipher in the formal sense, but it behaves like a metric bridge between Z408 and Z340. It appears after the July 31 three-part cipher mailing and before Z340. It introduces the sentence “This is the Zodiac speaking,” formalizing the name after the earlier Vallejo phone call had already created oral authorship before the name. But beyond tone and narrative control, the Debut Letter carries structural properties that make it relevant to the cipher cascade [14].

Its prose exhibits numerical staging. The cleaned lexical body can be read as 408 words after removing six plus-sign glyphs, echoing Z408. The last major outlier aligns with 340, echoing Z340. The first 63 words form a glyph-free buffer, while Z340 contains its own original 63-symbol logic. The 74-word structural mirror links edge-zone emptiness in the Debut Letter to a re-tokenized Z340 plaintext condition. The phrase “aprox 3 to 6 in. across,” while superficially describing the flashlight beam or black-dot circle, also operates as a self-referential page-geometry cue: the written field itself occupies a measured three-to-six-inch band [14].

The Debut Letter therefore belongs between Z408 and Z340 as a prose-cipher bridge.

It does not encrypt by substitution. It encrypts by layout, rhythm, misspelling, word count, glyph insertion, numerical echo, and page geometry. Its function is not to hide a plaintext message inside a cipher grid. Its function is to show that the killer’s prose could inherit cipher metrics. In other words, the cascade does not move only from cipher to cipher. It also moves from cipher into letter, from letter back into cipher, from number into page, from page into symbol, and from symbol into geography.

The canonical cascade therefore has two branches after Z408, as shown in Figure 3.

Figure 3. Canonical ciphers as a systemic cascade with Debut Letter as a prose-bridge parallel branch

This is why Z32 Volume 4 must begin with the cascade system. Z32 cannot be properly read if treated only as an isolated 32-character code attached to a map. It is the endpoint of a prior sequence of inherited structures:

Z408 provides first-cipher architecture, symbol inventory, row/column discipline, 17-column logic, 24-row/3x8 structure, last-18 residue, and latent 32x13 transformation.

The Debut Letter provides prose metrics: 408, 340, 63, 74, “3 to 6,” glyph insertion, and page geometry.

Z340 provides solved transposition, symbol-key mutation, route logic, and the proof that the killer’s cipher system can require geometrical movement rather than simple left-to-right substitution.

Z13 provides entropy tiering, external key inheritance, 8-ball functionality, runic/genealogical outliers, and a compressed name-riddle.

Z32 then receives the entire cascade and externalizes it onto a map.

Table I summarizes the cascade of ciphers.

Function within the cascade

Z408

First-cipher architecture; symbol inventory; row/column discipline; 17-column logic; 24-row / 3×8 structure; last-18 residue; latent 32×13 transformation.

Establishes the original cipher grid and embeds later structural possibilities. It is the first architectural layer of the system.

Debut Letter

Prose metrics: 408, 340, 63, 74, “3 to 6”; glyph insertion; page geometry.

Acts as a prose-cipher bridge between Z408 and Z340. It transfers cipher logic into layout, rhythm, word count, and self-referential page design.

Z340

Transposition pathway; symbol-key mutation; route logic; geometrical movement.

Demonstrates that the cipher system can require spatial/geometrical movement rather than simple left-to-right substitution.

Z13

Entropy tiering; external key inheritance; 8-ball functionality; runic/genealogical outliers; compressed name-riddle.

Compresses the cascade into a short cipher that must inherit meaning from prior systems rather than generate a full key. Dominant 8-ball symbol resolved by internal geometry (esoteric structure).

Z32

Receives the entire prior cascade and externalizes it onto a map.

Converts the cipher cascade into cartography: the grid leaves the page and becomes geography.

This is the true importance of the Phillips 66 map. It is not simply a background image for a threat. It is the moment when the killer’s cipher system becomes cartographic. Mount Diablo becomes the center. MAG N becomes instruction and acronym. The 17-degree shift becomes both map correction and symbolic transposition. The canonical crime scenes become angular data points. The Solano County crimes become water/sulfur coordinates. The bomb becomes the semantic object toward which the whole system points.

Z32 is therefore not merely a cipher asking where a bomb is set.

It is the cascade system turning into a map.

The next sections of this volume will proceed from that premise. First, the canonical cipher cascade will be formalized as a set of inherited metrics. Then the Debut Letter will be placed more precisely inside that cascade as a prose-branch between Z408 and Z340. Finally, Z32 will be revisited not as an isolated unsolved code, but as the cartographic endpoint of a system whose earlier stages had already taught the reader how to think: by number, by symbol, by transposition, by page, by route, by name, and by hidden geography.

3. Four Angular Operators: Grid North, MAG N, and the Transposition Switch

The numerical analysis developed in this section proceeds from a simple premise: the Z32 map instruction does not produce only one angular reading. It produces a system of angular operators.

The first operator is the base frame: Mount Diablo measured against Grid North (Table II). This is the terrestrial starting condition. In this frame, the first two canonical crime scenes, Lake Herman Road and Blue Rock Springs, fall in Aquarius; Lake Berryessa falls in Pisces; Presidio Heights and Mason-and-Geary North fall in Sagittarius. This establishes the original Aquarius/Pisces ambiguity of the canonical field. In the CHS framework, that ambiguity is not merely celestial. It reflects the historical terrestrial problem already encountered in the Solano County landscape: sulfur, gas, mercury, mining, water diversion, contamination, Lake Herman, Blue Rock Springs, and the old Sulphur Springs mountain system.

The second operator is the MAG N right shift of 17 degrees (Table III). This is the conventional magnetic-north correction, and it produces the most striking result from the earlier Z32 volumes: the three couple-crime scenes — LHR, BRS, and LB — align into Pisces, the mutable water sign. PH and MAG N shift into Capricorn. This is the water-facing transformation. The first three canonical attacks, all involving couples, are pulled into a shared water field. In the Solano pair, this points back toward Lake Herman, Blue Rock Springs, Sulphur Springs Creek, and the mining/water-contamination history. In Lake Berryessa, it points toward Monticello, the submerged valley, the older mining and water-landscape memory around the reservoir, and the transformation of inhabited land into managed water.

The third operator is the MAG N left shift of 17 degrees (Table IV). Here the 17-degree value is treated not only as a correction but as an origin point. Instead of moving the angular field forward into Pisces, the left shift rolls the first three canonical crime scenes back into Aquarius. This creates the mirror of the right-shift result. If the right shift emphasizes water, the left shift emphasizes air: sulfur gas, toxic vapor, hydrogen sulfide, the invisible medium of contamination. In other words, the right shift describes the water-field; the left shift describes the cause-field.

Water receives the contamination. Air carries it. Aquarius, the air sign of the water-bearer, becomes the symbolic boundary where gas and water meet.

This gives the 17-degree MAG N operation the character of a switch.

Shift right, and the canonical couple crimes enter Pisces: water, reservoir, flood, spring, lake, contamination.

Shift left, and they return to Aquarius: air, gas, sulfur, bearer, carrier, cause.

The switch does not erase the ambiguity. It organizes it.

The Aquarius/Pisces boundary becomes the exact symbolic expression of the historical Solano problem: sulfur and mercury entering the water system through mining, diversion, and civic infrastructure.

The fourth operator is different (Table V). It does not treat MAG N only as Magnetic North. It treats MAG N as Mason and Geary — North, the possible acronymic substitution associated with the beginning of Stine’s death route. When Mason-and-Geary North is used as the origin point, the entire angular field is normalized to the urban threshold of the fourth canonical crime. In this frame, MAG N becomes zero. Presidio Heights falls almost immediately after the origin within Aries first degree. The first three crime scenes move into the Gemini field.

Table V. Canonical crime scenes distance and angle from Mt Diablo – MAG N as Mason and Geary (fourth operator)

This result is important because Gemini is ruled by Mercury. Within the CHS reference-index method, Mercury is not introduced as a horoscope claim, but as a carrier-signature. Mercury is the mobile element, the messenger, the quicksilver, and the contaminant. In the historical Solano landscape, mercury is literal: quicksilver mining, mine tailings, water pollution, Sulphur Springs Mountain, St. John’s Mine, Hastings Mine, Lake Herman, and Blue Rock Springs. The Mason-and-Geary normalization therefore produces a new interpretation of the first three crime scenes: not only as water sites, not only as sulfur/air-water ambiguity, but as Mercury-carried contamination.

In that same Mason-and-Geary frame, Presidio Heights becomes an Aries threshold. This transforms Stine’s murder into a solitary sacrificial figure at the beginning of the zodiacal cycle. The previous three attacks involve couples; PH breaks the pattern. The earlier crimes are moved through water, gas, and Mercury. The fourth crime becomes a threshold murder: the lone victim, the urban route, the shirt piece, the certification of authorship, and the crossing from scene into proof.

This is where the temporal dimension enters. If Mason-and-Geary North is treated as zero in the zodiacal year, the origin corresponds symbolically to the vernal-equinoctial threshold. In that symbolic calendar frame, PH falls “upon” March 22 — the date of the Kathleen Johns abduction and car-burning incident later claimed by the Zodiac. This is not offered as proof of intentional design. It is offered as a striking temporal resonance produced by the same angular normalization that makes Mason-and-Geary North the origin of the Stine route.

The resonance is strengthened by geography and biography. Johns was abducted west of Modesto, the city where Paul Stine was born and raised. The site also intersects with the old Haas hydroelectric field, while Union Square — the beginning of the Stine death route in the broader Presidio Heights analysis — carries its own Haas outlier through Abraham Haas’s final residence at the St. Francis Hotel [15]. The Stine crime scene itself lies one block west of the Haas-affiliated Russell House on Washington and Maple [15]. These details do not constitute a solution by themselves, but they belong to the same CHS coordinate field: names, roads, power, water, residence, origin, route, and after-claim.

The canonical crime dates add a further internal narrative. LHR falls under Sagittarius, BRS under Cancer, and LB/PH under Libra. Read only as astrology, this would be weak. Read as a reference-index sequence, it becomes a compressed symbolic narrative: the hunter, water, and justice. A hunter-associated sequence enters the water field and ends under the sign of judgment (the dual scales of justice). This does not require literal belief in astrology. It requires only that the zodiacal circle is being used as an indexing system, one capable of converting crime scenes, dates, routes, and map geometry into a structured symbolic grammar.

The four angular operators therefore produce four readings of the same canonical field (Table VII):

Method 1 — Grid North: the unshifted terrestrial frame. LHR/BRS sit in Aquarius; LB in Pisces; PH/MAG N in Sagittarius. Grid North preserves the original terrestrial ambiguity.

Method 2 — MAG N right shift +17°: the conventional magnetic correction; the couple-crime sites align in Pisces/water, while PH enters Capricorn.

Method 3 — MAG N left shift −17°: treats 17° itself as an origin/reset point; the first three crime scenes roll back into Aquarius (gas-cause-field), while PH/MAG N move into the Scorpio–Sagittarius boundary condition.

Method 4 — Mason-and-Geary North normalization: treats MAG N as Mason and Geary North, sets it to zero, and reorders the field from the Stine-route origin. Mason-and-Geary normalization produces Gemini/Mercury contamination and Aries/Ram sacrifice.

Together, these operators support the broader thesis of this volume: the Z32 map is not merely a cipher attached to a threat. It is the cartographic endpoint of a cascade system. The earlier ciphers taught number, symbol, transposition, and route. Z32 moves those methods onto the map. The grid leaves the page and becomes geography.

A further stability check emerges from the four angular operators. The first three canonical crime scenes remain clustered within an Air/Water/Mercury field, while Presidio Heights remains structurally separate, moving instead through Earth/Fire threshold symbolism, as shown in Figure 4.

Figure 4. Elemental classification of canonical crime scenes based on the four angular operators

This is important because it means the angular transformations do not dissolve the canonical sequence into arbitrary symbolic noise. They preserve the deepest behavioral division of the case. Lake Herman Road, Blue Rock Springs, and Lake Berryessa are couple attacks. Presidio Heights is not. The first three scenes remain tied to the water-bearing, water-receiving, gas-carrying, Mercury-contamination system. PH remains the rupture: the lone victim, the urban cab route, the shirt-piece authentication, and the final canonical murder as certification threshold.

The four operators therefore produce not chaos, but structure. Grid North preserves the mixed state. MAG N switches it. Mason-and-Geary localizes it. This prepares the central interpretive question of the next section: whether Z32 is not merely reflecting ambiguity, but formalizing it into a map-cipher method.

4. Interpretive Discussion: Ambiguity Formalization

The numerical transpositions described in the previous section should not be treated as isolated symbolic play. Their significance lies in the fact that they formalize, in the map-cipher domain, ambiguities already present in the canonical crimes themselves.

This is the central point of the present volume: Z32 does not invent the ambiguity of the Zodiac canon. It formalizes it.

Lake Herman Road begins the canonical sequence as a spatial ambiguity. The crime scene is not reducible to a single stable description. It is a lovers’ lane, but not only a lovers’ lane. It is a rural road, but not only a road. It is an estate-border environment, a ranch landscape, a refinery-commute corridor, a water-infrastructure zone, a hunting field, a low-density surveillance field, and a jurisdictional boundary problem. The victims lived in Vallejo. The alarm passed through Benicia. Formal jurisdiction fell to Solano County. Even at the institutional level, the first canonical crime is a boundary condition.

In other words, LHR is ambiguity in space.

Blue Rock Springs then shifts the ambiguity into time. The attack occurs across the boundary of July 4 and July 5, 1969. The public soundscape of Independence Day allows fireworks and gunfire to overlap. Police records classify the murder as July 5. The offender’s call to Vallejo Police Department occurs at approximately 12:40 a.m. on July 5. Yet the later Lake Berryessa car-door inscription identifies the Blue Rock Springs attack as July 4. The crime therefore sits on a calendar threshold: one day bleeding into the next, public celebration bleeding into private execution, event bleeding into call, and call bleeding into file.

In other words, BRS is ambiguity in time.

This temporal ambiguity is intensified by the July 4/July 5 Saint Elizabeth resonance. This must not be overstated as proof of offender intent, but it belongs to the symbolic pressure field. Both first canonical female victims carry the Elizabeth/Elisabeth name-field: Louisa Elisabetha Jensen and Darlene Elizabeth Suennen. BRS itself occupies the July 4/July 5 threshold around the feast-day displacement of Saint Elizabeth in the United States context. The ambiguity is therefore not merely administrative. It becomes calendrical, nominal, and archival.

Lake Berryessa adds a third form of ambiguity: ritual-control ambiguity. The offender appears in costume, speaks to the victims, binds them, uses a knife, writes on the car door, and dates the prior crimes through his own ledger. The scene is physical, theatrical, symbolic, and documentary at once. It is neither only murder nor only message. It is a staged crossing between act and inscription.

Presidio Heights then becomes the certification threshold. The fourth canonical murder breaks the couple-attack pattern. It moves into the city, into the cab route, into wealth/civic geography, and into hard evidentiary proof through the shirt piece. PH is not simply the fourth crime. It is the point at which authorship is certified by material possession. The offender no longer only claims. He attaches proof.

These four ambiguity fields — spatial, temporal, ritual-documentary, and evidentiary-certificational — are already present before Z32. What Z32 does is convert them into a map operation.

The four angular methods show this conversion clearly.

Grid North preserves the mixed state. In the unshifted frame, the first two Solano County crimes occupy Aquarius, Lake Berryessa occupies Pisces, and Presidio Heights/Mason-and-Geary North occupy Sagittarius. The first three crimes sit across an Air/Water ambiguity field. This fits the historical Solano landscape: sulfur gas, mercury, water, mining, creeks, springs, reservoirs, and civic infrastructure. The ambiguity is not resolved. It is held.

The MAG N right shift resolves the ambiguity toward water. The three couple-crime scenes move into Pisces. The symbolic output is water, reservoir, spring, lake, flood, mine, contamination, and the couple-victim sequence. In this state, the first three crimes become a water-aligned system.

The MAG N left shift resolves the same ambiguity toward air. The first three crime scenes roll back into Aquarius. The symbolic output becomes carrier, gas, sulfur vapor, hydrogen sulfide, the water-bearer, and the invisible medium by which contamination travels. In this state, the first three crimes become an air/gas-aligned system.

The Mason-and-Geary North normalization introduces the Mercury carrier-state. If MAG N is read as Mason and Geary — North, the Stine route becomes the origin. The first three crime scenes move into Gemini, ruled by Mercury. Here Mercury is not only a celestial reference. It is quicksilver, messenger, mobility, toxicity, and transmission. It becomes the carrier term between mine, water, body, message, and map.

Presidio Heights remains separate across these transformations. In the right shift, it moves into Capricorn, an earth sign, fitting the material certification function of the Stine murder. In the left shift, the Stine route enters the Scorpio/Sagittarius boundary, a threshold from death/underworld symbolism into the hunter sign. In the Mason-and-Geary frame, PH becomes an Aries/Ram threshold: the lone sacrificial figure at the start of the zodiacal cycle.

The stability of this separation matters. The first three crime scenes remain in the Air/Water/Mercury carrier field. PH remains in the Earth/Fire threshold field. The system does not randomize. It preserves the deepest behavioral division of the canon: the first three crimes are couple attacks, while the fourth breaks the pattern and certifies authorship through material evidence.

This is why the 17-degree MAG N operation behaves like a switch. The switch does not eliminate ambiguity. It organizes ambiguity into alternate readable states.

This is ambiguity formalization.

In Commentary Vol. 3 [16], ambiguity was treated as an offender structural tool. Ambiguity damages classification. It forces law enforcement, the press, and later researchers to keep asking unstable questions: which crimes belong, which letters are authentic, where the sequence begins, where it ends, which dates count, which names matter, and what the offender really meant. The ambiguity is not an accident of weak evidence alone. It becomes part of the weapon.

Z32 shows the same principle in cartographic form. The map-cipher takes ambiguity already present in the crimes and turns it into an operator. Space ambiguity becomes angular ambiguity. Time ambiguity becomes calendar ambiguity. Victim-pattern ambiguity becomes element/sign ambiguity. Authorship ambiguity becomes map instruction. MAG N becomes both direction and acronym. Mount Diablo becomes both meridian and symbolic center. The bomb becomes both threat and semantic object.

In this sense, Z32 is not merely an unsolved cipher attached to a map. It is the formalization of the canonical ambiguity system.

The grid leaves the page and becomes geography.

The ambiguity leaves the crime scene and becomes method.

The offender’s earlier crimes created unstable fields of place, time, performance, and proof. His later communications exploited those fields. Z32 then compresses them into a map-cipher whose instructions require the reader to shift, rotate, substitute, normalize, and reinterpret. The reader is not only asked to solve a code. The reader is forced to inhabit the offender’s ambiguity machine.

That is the deeper violence of the Z32.

Not the bomb alone.

The system.

5. Conclusion: The Grid Leaves the Page

The purpose of this volume was not to solve Z32 by theatrical declaration. It was to place Z32 where it belongs: inside a cascade.

The first three Z32 volumes established the road into the map. Volume 1 situated the cipher inside the bomb-rhetoric continuum. Volume 2 placed the canonical crime scenes around Mount Diablo and tested the instruction of MAG N against the geography of the case. Volume 3 opened the Solano County layer: sulfur, mercury, mines, water, Lake Herman, Blue Rock Springs, and the historical contamination field beneath the surface of the canonical crimes.

This fourth volume has attempted to show what those prior steps imply. Z32 is not merely a 32-symbol cipher attached to a map. It is a cartographic compression of earlier Zodiac methods. The ciphers before it had already taught the reader how to think: by number, by symbol, by metric, by transposition, by residue, by inherited key, by page geometry, by false simplicity, and by delayed meaning. Z32 then moves that logic outward. The grid leaves the page and becomes geography.

That is the central conclusion.

The canonical cipher cascade begins with Z408, where the first great grid appears. It continues through Z340, where the grid is transformed. It compresses itself in Z13, where the cipher becomes too short to contain its own key and must be read through inheritance. It then externalizes itself in Z32, where the cipher no longer sits alone on the page but is coupled to a map, a mountain, a compass instruction, and a threat.

The map does not simplify the riddle.

It enlarges it.

The four angular operators examined in this volume — Grid North, MAG N right shift, MAG N left shift, and Mason-and-Geary North normalization — show that the canonical field does not dissolve into randomness when shifted. It reorganizes. The first three crime scenes remain bound to the Air/Water/Mercury carrier field: gas, water, contamination, quicksilver, transmission, reservoir, spring, lake, and couple-victim pattern. Presidio Heights remains apart: earth, fire, threshold, lone victim, urban route, shirt-piece proof, and authorship certification.

This preservation of structure is the point. The transpositions do not invent meaning from nothing. They formalize ambiguity already present in the crimes.

Lake Herman Road begins the canon with space as ambiguity: rural road, lovers’ lane, ranch border, refinery corridor, water infrastructure, hunting territory, county jurisdiction, and low-density surveillance field. Blue Rock Springs shifts ambiguity into time: July 4 into July 5, holiday noise into gunfire, police date into offender date, Elizabeth/Elisabeth name-field into calendar threshold, event into phone call, phone call into file. Lake Berryessa turns ambiguity into staged ritual and inscription. Presidio Heights turns ambiguity into certification: the proof of the shirt, the route through civic wealth, and the lone victim who breaks the couple pattern.

Z32 takes these fields and turns them into an operator.

This is ambiguity formalization.

The offender’s crime was never only physical. It was also administrative, symbolic, temporal, and cartographic. He did not merely attack people. He attacked categories: place, date, authorship, jurisdiction, evidence, authenticity, motive, beginning, ending, and name. His communications did not heal these wounds. They kept them open. They forced the system to process uncertainty as if uncertainty itself were evidence.

That is why the map matters.

A map can reveal. A map can deceive. A map can orient. A map can trap. In Z32, the map is not an innocent aid to a cipher. It is the stage on which the cipher becomes terrain.

The next volume will move from the operator to the historical chain compressed around June 1970.

That chain begins before the Button Letter itself. It moves through the Phillips 66 / Mount Diablo map field, the June 24, 1970 amateur ham radio newspaper clipping, the murder of Officer Richard Radetich, the Ygnacio outlier, the transposition toward the Red Cross building on Ygnacio Street, and the deeper historical terrain of Pacheco, Berryessa, civic water, and old Bay Area family geography. It also moves through the “Gift from Zodiac” pair of Oakland A’s tickets, postmarked June 18, 1970 from Vallejo and received by Barbara Tagert the following day, leading into Vallejo Police contact on a Little League field and opening a new corridor into Faraday social connections, the Vallejo Sailing Club, Little League networks, and the local civic-social fabric around the victims.

The next volume will also return to the living calendar of the case. Around Z32 and the first anniversary of Blue Rock Springs, the dates begin to thicken: Michael Mageau’s family field, the Suennen-Hightower anniversary of July 6, 1946, the BRS anniversary, and the movement from June 1970 into July 1970. The map-cipher did not arrive in a vacuum. It arrived inside a compressed civic, familial, calendrical, and geographic field.

Volume 5 will therefore ask what happens when the Z32 map is placed back inside the historical weather of June 1970.

But the final object must wait.

The deeper center — Ground Zero, the Zero-Error Point, the Zero Angle, the possibility that zero itself becomes Z — belongs to Volume 6. That is where the map may finally be forced to answer what kind of center it was hiding.

For now, Volume 4 ends with the method.

The killer tried to turn ambiguity into power. He tried to make confusion serve him. He built a terrain of inverted morality, where dates became wounds, names became masks, maps became threats, and murdered human beings were dragged into his private machinery of signs.

But a machine can be studied.

A map can be re-read.

A false priesthood of symbols can be stripped of its costume.

There is no glory in his riddles. There is no genius in murder. There is only a damaged system of vanity, cruelty, and control, preserved because the dead were denied justice and the living were forced to inherit the uncertainty.

The task is not to admire the machine.

The task is to dismantle it.

The map-cipher placed the reader inside the offender’s ambiguity. The work now is to reverse the direction of that violence: to take the same coordinates, the same dates, the same names, the same historical terrain, and bring them back under disciplined scrutiny.

Not as worship.

Not as myth.

As evidence.

The terrain of inverted morality will not remain his.

It will be measured, indexed, exposed, and cleansed of his hybris.
